Unsure about Your Sexual Health?

Valentine's day valentine's day valentine's day valentine's day valentine's day.

With Valentine’s Day incoming, we want to discuss one of the main topics of pelvic health physical therapy: Sexual Health. This includes the function of your pelvic floor muscles to assist with arousal, lubrication, erection, ejaculation, and orgasm. Whether you chose to celebrate Valentine’s day or not, or whether you are sexually active or not, the most important thing to know is that sex should not be painful.

Sex can be defined in many ways. To clarify, touching the genitals, the pelvic floor muscles, the lower abdomen, inner thighs, and glutes should not cause pain for you. Additionally, if you are participating in penetrative intercourse, this should also be nonpainful. If you experience pain with any of the mentioned above, I encourage you to book an appointment with one of your medical providers for proper medical screening and also, to schedule an appointment with me at Be Ready Performance Therapy.

Sexual health concerns affect all genders and people. There are many things that can cause pain with intercourse but statistically, lack of lubrication is the most common cause of pain with intercourse, especially if you are recently postpartum and/or breastfeeding. At Be Ready PT we understand it can be difficult and often feel embarrassing to discuss these sensitive topics with a medical provider. We take pride in our confidentiality and discretion when it relates to these topics. If you have questions or feel you need further information about what pelvic health PT includes or how I can help with your sexual health symptoms, email me at colleen@bereadypt.com or call us at (615-617-4942).

I also encourage you to consider speaking to a talk therapist regarding your sexual pelvic health concerns. Pain from sexual experiences is often multi-layered with physical, emotional, and mental components. One-on-one therapy as well as couples therapy can be an INCREDIBLE tool for resolving your sexual health symptoms. We have many partners we work with for counseling services. I would be happy to help you get in contact with someone to help you find the best fit for your journey. Two of our favorite resources include ReadyNest Counseling for pregnant and postpartum needs and the Briggs Institute, Inc. for multiple therapy resources related to marriage and family therapy, including sex therapy.
